Our History
Back in the Day!
Let’s go back to the year “1975” or 1957, or 1947 and beyond…
My family migrated to California from the south in the 1930’s
So I say…
From the shores of Africa, by way of Louisiana,
Arkansas meets Texas
and they marry at the shores of Santa Monica!
When I was growing, my fondest memories spent at this site it was one of our most loved community hubs.
Especially on Fridays.
Have you ever heard of the expression “The eagle flies on Fridays?” Meaning PAYDAY!
We could go and enjoy the fruits of our labor.
On Friday my uncles were at Jack the barbers getting their hair cut….at that time was the famous “covadis” fade or Afro blow out and the finishing touch of the Magnificent brother’s hair sheen. My aunts and friends sat at Claudia’s Beauty shop hours to get their favorite curls and coiffures sprayed to the T with Aquanet (we called it the glue).
I was always rushing home from school to see what I could style that night at the Samohi football games.
Ms. Claire’s her specialty boutique, inexpensive prices and layaway all to accommodate your budget. Claire’s boutique was where I got my first pair of bell bottoms and white silk ruffle blouse. I just knew that I was cute.

So you see this was like our first strip mall. Because on this block we had a church, beauty shop, barbershop, clothing boutique, egg store and planned parenthood all to service and accommodate the village.
